“I wish my teeth were whiter.”February 14, 2012
That’s a comment we hear every day. Everyone wants whiter teeth, and why wouldn’t we? Every time we turn on the television or open a
magazine we see dazzling white smiles. A whiter, brighter smile can take years off how we look and feel. In fact having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most dental patients.
The nice part is today many patients can have whiter, brighter teeth without the expense of potentially expensive veneers and caps. Tooth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel and can be an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.
There are many ways to whiten teeth, and with the many options available it can be quite confusing to the average patient. There are toothpastes, mouth rinses, do it yourself whitening strips, custom bleaching trays and in office bleaching methods. Which one is right for you?
This depends on a variety of factors such as age, existing restorations and desired whiteness. That’s where you friendly neighborhood dentist or dental hygienist comes in. We are experts in teeth!!!
Often times the most predictable method is a combination of the above. We often can do in office whitening followed by a custom take home tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth dramatically. Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
It’s important to keep in mind that tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up maybe needed every several years, and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.
What does tooth whitening involve?
This type of tooth whitening usually requires two visits. At the first appointment, impressions (molds) will be made of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear plastic, trays. Then we can jump start the process by applying the bleaching solution to your teeth here in the office. Typically this appointment will be about one hour.
At your second appointment, you will try on the trays for proper fit, and adjustments will be made if necessary. The trays are worn with special whitening solution either once a day for 30 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks depending on the degree of staining and desired level of whitening. It is not uncommon to experience some slight tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching.
